PCMs absorb a large amount of energy in the form of latent heat when they change phase. For example, paraffin wax can absorb heat during its melting process. When incorporated into a battery pack, PCMs act as a thermal buffer, absorbing excess heat during discharge and releasing it when the battery cools down. Often, additives like graphite are used to improve the thermal conductivity of PCMs, ensuring more efficient heat distribution.In many modern applications, a single cooling method is insufficient. Hybrid systems combine active and passive techniques to leverage the benefits of each approach while mitigating their limitations. For instance, a battery pack might use liquid cooling as the primary heat removal method, while integrated PCMs provide additional buffering during peak thermal loads.
